One-on-One with Mr. Vinod Goyal, CEO, Agricare Corporation

By Anjali Tyagi, Senior Journalist

As global trade routes and regional partnerships continue to evolve, Iran’s Chabahar Port remains an important part of India’s connectivity and strategic vision. Considered a key gateway for India’s access to Afghanistan and Central Asia, the port has gained significance not only in trade but also in regional cooperation and economic integration.

In this exclusive one-on-one conversation with Senior Journalist Anjali Tyagi, Mr. Vinod Goyal, CEO of Agricare Corporation, shares his perspective on Chabahar’s importance, regional connectivity, global geopolitical developments, and India’s long-term strategic interests. With more than 40 years of experience in the agriculture sector and international agri trade, Mr. Goyal brings valuable insight into trade corridors, supply chains, and regional economic partnerships.

Q1. Why has Chabahar Port remained strategically important for India over the years?

Mr. Vinod Goyal: Iran has always been an important trade partner for India, and Chabahar Port provides India with an important connectivity route to Afghanistan and Central Asia. The port helps India strengthen regional trade access and diversify its connectivity options.

For India, Chabahar is not only a trade project but also part of a broader long-term strategy to enhance regional cooperation and economic engagement.

Q2. Was Chabahar mainly a trade project for India, or did it also carry geopolitical importance?

Mr. Vinod Goyal: Chabahar has significance on multiple levels. On one hand, it supports India’s trade and connectivity objectives, while on the other it contributes to India’s strategic presence in the region.

As regional infrastructure and port development projects continue to expand across Asia, it becomes important for India to strengthen its own connectivity partnerships. In that context, Chabahar plays a meaningful role in maintaining balanced regional engagement.

Q3. If India reduces its involvement in the project, what could be the possible impact?

Mr. Vinod Goyal: India has invested significant diplomatic and economic efforts in Chabahar over the years. Any reduction in involvement could affect India’s long-term connectivity plans and regional outreach.

At the same time, many countries are actively looking to strengthen their presence in regional trade corridors. Therefore, it is important for India to continue engagement in projects that support its strategic and economic interests.

Q4. Are US sanctions creating challenges for India’s long-term engagement with Chabahar?

Mr. Vinod Goyal: International sanctions and geopolitical developments have certainly made long-term investment planning more complex. However, global situations continue to evolve, and policies may change with time depending on diplomatic and economic priorities.

India has consistently followed a balanced and strategic approach in international relations. Going forward, cooperation and dialogue among nations will remain important for regional stability and development.

Q5. Does India have any strong alternative to Chabahar for regional trade access?

Mr. Vinod Goyal: At present, Chabahar remains one of the most important connectivity projects for India’s access to Afghanistan and Central Asia. It also supports larger initiatives like the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC).

For India, maintaining diversified and reliable trade routes is strategically important. Chabahar continues to play a valuable role in strengthening India’s regional connectivity and long-term economic engagement.
