TDB Supports OrthoGraft to Develop Indigenous Biological Dressings for Complex Wounds

The Technology Development Board (TDB), under the Department of Science & Technology (DST), Government of India, has extended financial assistance to Vadodara-based medical technology startup OrthoGraft Pvt. Ltd. to establish a production facility for advanced tissue-derived biological dressings. The initiative is aimed at converting innovations in tissue engineering into clinically relevant wound-care products for patients suffering from chronic and difficult-to-heal wounds.

The project, titled “Production Set-up for Advanced Tissue Derived Biological Dressings,” will enable OrthoGraft to strengthen its manufacturing capabilities for indigenous biological dressings designed for applications including chronic wounds, diabetic foot ulcers and burn injuries.

Focus on Advanced Wound-Care Technologies

OrthoGraft is a DPIIT-recognised medical device startup working on tissue substitutes for clinical reconstruction and functional repair. Its technology platform focuses on processing viable human tissue into shelf-stable substitutes while retaining important biological and structural properties that may support the wound-healing process.

The company’s tissue-processing technology is designed to remove cellular components efficiently while preserving the quality of the tissue and its bioactive elements. The resulting biological dressings are being developed to provide improved tensile strength and high retention of bioactive factors. The products are also being designed with a Moisture Vapour Transmission Rate (MVTR) comparable to that of commercially available moist wound dressings.

By combining tissue engineering, biomaterials science and specialised processing techniques, the project seeks to convert suitable biomedical tissue material into high-value biological dressings with potential applications in the treatment and management of chronic and hard-to-heal wounds.

Manufacturing Facility in Vadodara

With TDB’s support, OrthoGraft will enhance its production infrastructure at the Savli Technology Business Incubator in Vadodara, Gujarat, where it has leased a bio-incubation facility. The location provides the startup with access to biotechnology research and development infrastructure needed for medical device development and technology translation.

The company has secured the necessary licences from the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) to manufacture medical devices for testing purposes. It is also exploring partnerships with tertiary-care hospitals and medical institutions to support further product development, evaluation and eventual clinical translation.

Building Indigenous Medical Technology

OrthoGraft has developed multidisciplinary expertise in tissue processing and tissue substitutes and currently holds two granted US patents. The company is also collaborating with institutions of national importance, including IIT Ropar, as well as multispecialty hospitals, to advance its technology platform.

The startup has previously participated as an industry partner in Government of India-supported multi-institutional research, development and commercialisation initiatives. Its latest project is expected to further strengthen its capacity to take laboratory-level innovations towards scalable manufacturing and clinical applications.

TDB Emphasises Healthcare Innovation

TDB Secretary Shri Rajesh Kumar Pathak said advanced biomaterials and tissue-engineered products represent a significant emerging area for India’s medical technology ecosystem. He noted that the Board’s assistance is intended to help OrthoGraft transform its tissue-processing expertise into commercially manufacturable wound-care products.

According to Pathak, such initiatives can strengthen India’s domestic capabilities in advanced healthcare materials while creating opportunities for Indian innovations to reach international markets.

OrthoGraft’s leadership expressed appreciation for the support, stating that the assistance would help establish dedicated production capabilities and accelerate the conversion of its proprietary tissue-processing technology into clinically relevant products.

The company aims to develop an indigenous portfolio of advanced tissue substitutes and expand access to high-quality biological wound-care solutions. The initiative also reflects the broader effort to encourage technology-driven startups and strengthen domestic innovation and manufacturing capabilities in India’s medical device sector.
