The Ministry of Textiles observed Gandhi Jayanti on October 2, 2026, by undertaking a series of cleanliness and Swachhta activities as part of Special Campaign 6.0. The initiatives were aimed at strengthening cleanliness, hygiene, responsible waste management and sustainable workplace practices across offices and establishments associated with the Ministry.

The main programme was organised at the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Delhi, in the presence of the Secretary (Textiles), senior officials of the Ministry, faculty members and staff of NIFT Delhi. As part of the observance, a Swachhta Pledge was administered to participants, who reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining clean surroundings and contributing towards a healthier and more sustainable environment.

A cleanliness drive was subsequently conducted across the NIFT Delhi campus. Officers, faculty members and employees actively participated in activities focused on improving the upkeep of the premises, strengthening waste-management practices and creating greater awareness about personal and institutional responsibility for maintaining hygienic surroundings.

The Ministry said that the Gandhi Jayanti observance reflects its broader efforts to make Swachhta an integral part of routine functioning in its offices and field establishments. Under Special Campaign 6, emphasis has been placed on cleanliness, better utilisation of workplace spaces, disposal of obsolete and unusable materials, management of e-waste and resolution of pending matters.

Textile Waste Collection Drive Launched

A dedicated textile waste collection initiative was also launched from Gandhi Jayanti, with textile waste collection bins installed at various locations. The initiative seeks to encourage Jan Bhagidari and collective participation in building a cleaner and more sustainable India.

The programme focuses on the responsible collection, segregation, recycling and upcycling of post-consumer textile waste. It is intended to promote sustainable waste-management practices in Central Government office complexes and residential colonies in New Delhi.

Officers and officials have been encouraged to participate actively by bringing their post-consumer textile waste and depositing it in the designated collection bins during the campaign period. The initiative is expected to create greater awareness about the importance of diverting textile waste from conventional disposal channels and promoting its reuse and recycling.

The textile waste initiative also highlights the connection between cleanliness and sustainability. By encouraging responsible handling of discarded textiles, the campaign seeks to support resource conservation while reducing the environmental impact associated with textile waste.

Cleanliness Activities at Jute Board Offices

As part of the implementation phase of Special Campaign 6, officers and employees of the attached and subordinate offices of the Ministry of Textiles also participated in the Swachhta Pledge. The activities reinforced the importance of maintaining clean, hygienic and well-managed workplaces.

A comprehensive cleanliness and de-cluttering campaign was undertaken at the National Jute Board premises at Patsan Bhawan in Kolkata and at its Regional Office in New Delhi from October 2 to October 4, 2026. The drive focused on improving cleanliness and workplace organisation while supporting the wider objectives of the Special Campaign.

The Ministry of Textiles continues to undertake coordinated measures under Special Campaign 6 to strengthen Swachhta across its establishments. Alongside cleanliness drives, the campaign places particular emphasis on space management, disposal of obsolete items, e-waste management and reducing pendency.

Through these initiatives, the Ministry aims to promote sustained behavioural change and encourage employees to make cleanliness and responsible resource management an integral part of their everyday workplace practices. The activities conducted around Gandhi Jayanti underline the Ministry’s continued commitment to collective action, sustainable workplaces and the broader vision of a clean and well-managed India.
