Assam Agricultural University (AAU), Jorhat, has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the International Potato Center (CIP) to accelerate research, production, processing and value-chain development in the potato sector across Assam and the wider northeastern region.

The agreement was signed in New Delhi on August 23 under the CIP-National Agricultural Research Services (NARS) partnership. The collaboration seeks to bring together agricultural research expertise and region-specific technologies to address persistent challenges faced by potato growers in the Northeast.

Tackling Key Potato Production Challenges

Potato cultivation in the region faces several constraints, including relatively low productivity, inadequate availability of quality planting material, limited mechanisation and recurring pest and disease problems. Farmers also encounter difficulties due to insufficient cold-storage infrastructure and gaps in post-harvest management and market connectivity.

The new partnership is expected to focus on these challenges through coordinated research and technology development. By combining AAU’s understanding of local agricultural conditions with CIP’s international expertise in potato research, the initiative aims to develop practical solutions that can be adopted by farmers across the region.

Improving access to quality seed will be among the important areas of intervention. Reliable and disease-free planting material is essential for raising productivity and improving the quality of potato production. Research under the partnership is also expected to explore better nutrient management practices and production technologies suited to local farming conditions.

Focus on Climate-Resilient Agriculture

Climate variability is increasingly affecting agricultural production, making resilience an important component of the collaboration. The partnership will explore farming approaches and technologies that can help potato growers cope with changing climatic conditions while maintaining productivity.

Mechanisation and improved production practices will receive attention as well. Technologies adapted to the region’s terrain, farm sizes and prevailing agricultural systems could help reduce labour requirements and improve efficiency in potato cultivation.

Strengthening Processing and Value Addition

Beyond farm-level production, the MoU places emphasis on processing, value addition and the development of stronger potato value chains. Better processing opportunities can help farmers and enterprises move beyond the sale of fresh produce and create products with higher economic value.

The collaboration will also seek to improve market linkages, helping producers connect more effectively with buyers and markets. Strengthening these connections, along with improvements in post-harvest handling and storage, could reduce losses and increase returns for potato growers.

Research, Training and Capacity Building

The partnership will support a range of activities, including joint research, capacity building, training and community engagement. These efforts are intended to ensure that scientific knowledge and emerging technologies reach farmers and other stakeholders in the potato sector.

A significant benefit of the collaboration will be the opportunity for students and researchers from the Northeast to engage with international potato research networks. Such exposure can help build scientific capacity and encourage greater participation from the region in global agricultural research.
