एक बार की बात है प्राचीन समय में धन के देवता कुबेर को अपने धन पर अहंकार हो गया था. पूनम को यह घमंड हो गया था कि तीनों लोकों में सबसे ज्यादा धन संपत्ति उनके पास है. उन्होंने अपनी धन संपत्ति का वैभव दिखाने के लिए सभी देवताओं को एक महाभोज पर आमंत्रित किया. सबसे पहले कुबेर महाभोज का आमंत्रण लेकर कैलाश पर्वत पहुंचे और भगवान शंकर को सपरिवार भोजन पर आने का न्योता दिया. भगवान शंकर तो अंतर्यामी है और उन्होंने कुबेर के मन की बात जान ली. इसलिए उन्होंने कहा कि मेरी जगह मेरा पुत्र गणेश भोजन करने आएगा.

आखिरकार महाभोज का समय आ ही गया. इस दिन कुबेर ने सभी को सोने चांदी के थालों में भोजन परोसा. सभी देवी देवता भोजन करने के बाद वहां से रवाना हो गए. इसके बाद कुबेर के घर भगवान श्री गणेश भोजन करने पहुंचे. कुबेर ने भगवान श्री गणेश को भोजन परोसा. श्री गणेश जी ने भोजन शुरू किया और लंबे समय तक भोजन करते ही चले गए. इस तरह कुबेर का अन्न भंडार समाप्त होने लगा, लेकिन भगवान गणेश का पेट नहीं भर रहा था.

कुबेर, गणेश जी के लिए जो भी कुछ बचा था, वह सब ले आए. इसके बाद गणेश जी कुबेर के महलों की चीजों को भी खाने लगे. इस तरह कुबेर को डर लगने लगा और उन्हें अपने घमंड का अहसास हो गया. कुबेर ने अंत में जाकर भगवान श्री गणेश से माफी मांगी. इसके बाद श्री गणेश में कुबेर को माफ कर दिया और उन्हें सद्बुद्धि प्रदान की.
