India’s economy is expected to record around 7 per cent growth during the first quarter (April–June) of the current financial year, according to a pre-Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) assessment by SBI Research. The estimate is higher than earlier projections and reflects a broad-based improvement in economic activity despite an uncertain global environment.
The latest assessment suggests that the Indian economy has maintained its growth momentum through stronger industrial output, rising exports, improving consumer demand and favourable domestic conditions. The upgraded outlook comes ahead of the Reserve Bank of India’s monetary policy review and signals confidence in the country’s near-term economic performance.
Domestic Demand Continues to Drive Growth
SBI Research noted that several high-frequency economic indicators registered healthy growth during the April–June quarter, pointing to sustained economic resilience.
One of the strongest indicators was passenger vehicle sales, which expanded by 24.1 per cent year-on-year in June. The sharp rise reflects improving consumer confidence and stronger demand in the domestic market. Increased electricity consumption also highlighted expanding economic activity, with power demand rising 11.5 per cent during the period.
The report further observed that industrial credit grew by 19.2 per cent, indicating greater lending to manufacturing and industrial sectors. At the same time, the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) registered a growth rate of 7.3 per cent, suggesting that manufacturing and industrial activities gained momentum during the quarter.
Together, these indicators point towards robust domestic economic activity that has helped offset external challenges.
Export Recovery Adds Fresh Momentum
India’s export sector also showed encouraging signs of recovery during the first quarter. According to the report, exports increased by 15.5 per cent, reflecting improved demand in overseas markets and stronger performance across several export-oriented sectors.
The improvement in exports is significant because global trade has remained under pressure due to geopolitical tensions, supply chain disruptions and slowing growth in several major economies. Despite these challenges, Indian exporters have managed to expand their overseas shipments, contributing positively to overall economic growth.
A recovery in exports also strengthens foreign exchange earnings and supports industrial production by creating additional demand for domestically manufactured goods.
Global Risks Persist, but India Shows Resilience
While the report presents an optimistic outlook for the Indian economy, it also acknowledges that external risks continue to exist. Ongoing geopolitical tensions in West Asia and uncertainty in the global economy remain important factors that could affect international trade, commodity prices and financial markets.
However, SBI Research believes India’s domestic economy has demonstrated considerable resilience in navigating these global headwinds. Strong domestic consumption, expanding industrial activity and stable financial conditions have helped cushion the impact of external uncertainties.
The report suggests that India’s growth story continues to be driven primarily by domestic demand, making it relatively less vulnerable to global disruptions compared to many export-dependent economies.
Better Monsoon Expected to Strengthen Rural Economy
Agricultural conditions are also showing signs of improvement, which could provide additional support to economic growth in the coming months.
According to the report, surplus rainfall received during July has significantly improved the monsoon situation. The nationwide rainfall deficit has narrowed to around 13 per cent, while water levels in major reservoirs have returned to normal levels.
The progress of the kharif cropping season has also improved, with sowing remaining only 4.7 per cent below the level recorded during the corresponding period last year. These developments raise expectations of a better harvest, which could boost rural incomes, strengthen agricultural output and support consumption across rural markets.
A favourable monsoon is also expected to ease food supply concerns and contribute to price stability over the medium term.
Positive Signals Ahead of RBI Policy Review
The stronger-than-expected economic indicators provide encouraging signals ahead of the Reserve Bank of India’s upcoming monetary policy decision. Although global uncertainties remain, the combination of rising industrial production, stronger exports, healthy consumer demand and improving agricultural conditions has reinforced confidence in India’s growth trajectory.
If these trends continue through the rest of the financial year, India could remain among the world’s fastest-growing major economies, supported by robust domestic fundamentals and an improving rural outlook.
