Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Sunday performed the Bhoomi Pujan for 14 development projects valued at more than ₹100 crore at Lucknow Cantonment. The projects are aimed at strengthening civic infrastructure and improving essential public services, education, healthcare, sanitation, water supply and recreational facilities in the cantonment area.
The initiative includes 12 projects being undertaken directly to upgrade infrastructure in Lucknow Cantonment, while two projects are being implemented in partnership with the Uttar Pradesh government. Together, the projects are expected to contribute to better amenities and improved quality of life for residents.
Focus on Modern Civic Infrastructure
Among the major projects is an Artificial Intelligence-based Solid Waste Management Plant, which is intended to bring modern technology into waste processing and management. The development package also includes a Multi-Utility Sports Complex, providing improved facilities for sports and physical activities.
A Modern Crematorium is also part of the plan, alongside a 1,500-KL underground water reservoir. The projects further provide for the replacement of old and outlived water supply pipelines to strengthen the existing distribution network.
Water infrastructure will receive additional support through the construction of eight tubewells equipped with SCADA automation, as well as overhead water tanks with SCADA systems. These technology-enabled systems are expected to improve monitoring and management of water supply infrastructure.
Education and Facilities for Children
The development programme gives considerable attention to education and inclusive infrastructure. A special school for differently abled children will be established in Lucknow Cantonment to provide dedicated educational facilities and support.
Additional classrooms and toilets will also be constructed at RA Bazar Madhyamik Vidyalaya and Rainbow Model School. These projects are intended to expand educational infrastructure and provide students with improved learning and sanitation facilities.
The package also includes a Multi-Level Robotic Car Parking and Commercial Complex, aimed at addressing parking requirements while supporting urban infrastructure and commercial activity. Another major component is Legacy Waste Bio-Mining and Bio-Remediation, which will focus on scientifically treating accumulated waste and improving environmental conditions.
Two Projects with Uttar Pradesh Government
Two of the projects are being implemented in collaboration with the state government. These are the RA Bazar City Polyclinic and the Mukhyamantri Abhyudaya Coaching Centre.
The polyclinic is expected to strengthen access to healthcare services for people in the area, while the coaching centre will provide educational support and opportunities for students preparing for competitive examinations.
Following the Bhoomi Pujan, Rajnath Singh and Yogi Adityanath joined around 4,000 people in listening to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s monthly radio programme, Mann Ki Baat.
Rajnath Singh Highlights Centre-State Cooperation
Addressing the gathering, Rajnath Singh said the projects represent a comprehensive effort to improve civic amenities in Lucknow Cantonment. He highlighted areas including education, healthcare, sports, sanitation, cleanliness, water supply and urban infrastructure.
He stressed that the development of Lucknow Cantonment is closely connected with the overall progress of Lucknow and said coordinated efforts between the Centre and the Uttar Pradesh government can accelerate development and strengthen good governance.
The Defence Minister also linked the projects with the broader vision of building a Viksit Bharat by 2047. He said development should not be measured only through large infrastructure projects or modern buildings, but also through tangible improvements in people’s daily lives.
According to Rajnath Singh, quality education for children, access to clean drinking water, opportunities for young people to participate in sports and an inclusive society where differently abled children do not feel left behind are equally important indicators of development.
Markets Renamed to Reflect India’s Heritage
Rajnath Singh also referred to the recent renaming of several markets in Lucknow Cantonment. Names associated with the British era have been replaced with names honouring personalities connected with India’s freedom struggle and national life.
Royal Artillery Bazar has been renamed Ekta Bazar, British Cavalry Bazar as Uda Devi Bazar, and British Infantry Bazar as Matadin Valmiki Bazar. Another British Infantry Bazar has been renamed Mangal Pandey Bazar, while Kanedy Market has been renamed Atal Bihari Vajpayee Market.
The Defence Minister said the renaming initiative is intended to reconnect future generations with India’s heritage and inspire a spirit of national service.
Several senior officials and public representatives attended the event, including Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak, Minister of State Asim Arun, Central Command GOC-in-Chief Lt Gen Anindya Sengupta, Rajya Sabha MP Dinesh Sharma, Lucknow Mayor Sushma Kharwal and Director General of Defence Estates Shobha Gupta. Senior officials from the Defence Forces, Central and State governments, HAL, BEL and Lucknow Cantonment Board were also present.
