India’s push towards electric mobility received another significant boost with the Technology Development Board (TDB), under the Department of Science and Technology (DST), extending financial assistance to Indore-based RoadGrid India Private Limited for setting up a manufacturing and assembly facility for Universal Electric Vehicle (EV) Chargers. The initiative is expected to strengthen India’s charging infrastructure, promote indigenous manufacturing, and reduce dependence on imported charging technologies.
The project aligns with the Government of India’s vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat and supports the country’s broader objective of building a sustainable and self-reliant electric mobility ecosystem.
Manufacturing Facility for Next-Generation Chargers
Under the project, RoadGrid will establish a state-of-the-art manufacturing and assembly facility dedicated to the commercial production of Universal EV Chargers. Unlike conventional charging systems designed for specific vehicle categories, the universal charger will be capable of serving electric two-wheelers, three-wheelers, passenger cars, and commercial electric vehicles through a single integrated charging platform.
The initiative aims to address one of the major barriers to widespread EV adoption—the availability of interoperable charging infrastructure. By enabling multiple categories of electric vehicles to use the same charging station, the technology is expected to improve convenience for consumers while making charging infrastructure more cost-effective for operators.
Indigenous Technology at the Core
RoadGrid has developed a patented Universal EV Charger featuring a 140 kW dual DC gun configuration that supports both CCS2 and Type 6 charging standards, along with AC charging capability. This allows the charger to cater to a wide range of electric vehicles currently operating in the Indian market.
The manufacturing facility will undertake end-to-end production and assembly of various components, including power electronics, thermal management systems, embedded software, communication modules, metering systems, control hardware, enclosures, quality testing, calibration, and final system integration.
The facility has also been designed with scalability in mind, allowing future expansion into ultra-fast charging technologies and integrated energy storage solutions as demand for advanced EV infrastructure grows.
Strengthening India’s EV Ecosystem
Founded in 2020, RoadGrid India Private Limited has steadily built its presence in the electric mobility sector by developing indigenous EV charging hardware, intelligent software platforms, and charging infrastructure services.
The company manufactures EV chargers, deploys public charging stations, and develops smart energy management solutions. Through strategic collaborations with industry stakeholders, it has been expanding its footprint in India’s rapidly evolving EV charging landscape.
The new manufacturing facility is expected to significantly increase domestic production capacity for advanced EV charging equipment. Besides supporting import substitution in critical power electronics, it will help accelerate the deployment of charging infrastructure across cities, highways, residential complexes, commercial establishments, and fleet operations.
The integration of indigenous hardware with intelligent software and smart-grid technologies is expected to create a future-ready charging network capable of supporting India’s growing electric vehicle population.
TDB Highlights Importance of Indigenous Innovation
Speaking on the occasion, TDB Secretary Shri Rajesh Kumar Pathak underlined the importance of reliable and interoperable charging infrastructure in accelerating India’s transition to electric mobility.
He noted that indigenous development and manufacturing of advanced EV charging technologies would strengthen the country’s clean mobility ecosystem, reduce reliance on imported technologies, and support sustainable transportation. He also reiterated TDB’s commitment to supporting technology-driven enterprises developing globally competitive solutions for India’s green mobility future.
RoadGrid Eyes Expansion
RoadGrid’s leadership welcomed the financial assistance from TDB, stating that the support would enable the company to scale up manufacturing of its patented Universal EV Chargers and strengthen indigenous innovation in EV charging infrastructure.
The company said the project would accelerate the deployment of smart, reliable, and accessible charging solutions across the country while contributing to India’s efforts to build a comprehensive and interoperable charging network.
As India witnesses rapid growth in electric vehicle adoption across personal mobility, commercial transport, and public transportation, expanding domestic manufacturing capabilities for charging equipment has become increasingly important.
