The Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) and the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a structured mechanism for sharing relevant business data. The initiative is aimed at strengthening the Statistical Business Register (SBR) and improving the quality and coverage of information used for economic and statistical purposes.
The MoU provides a formal framework for the exchange of unit-level data available through the Udyam Registration ecosystem of the Ministry of MSME. The information will be shared through Application Programming Interfaces (APIs), enabling a systematic flow of relevant data between the two ministries.
The agreement was signed by Dr. Rajneesh, Additional Secretary and Development Commissioner, Ministry of MSME, and Dr. Dalip Singh, Additional Director General, MoSPI. Senior officials from both ministries were present during the signing ceremony.
Data Sharing Through Two-Way API
A key component of the agreement is the sharing of unit-wise data from Udyam Registration through APIs. The two-way API-based mechanism will support the preparation and regular strengthening of the National Statistical Business Register (NSBR).
The framework is expected to enable MoSPI to access relevant information from the Udyam Registration system in a structured manner. By facilitating the availability of business information from a major government registration platform, the arrangement can contribute to more comprehensive and reliable statistical databases.
The collaboration also seeks to establish a consistent process for sharing information between the two ministries. This is expected to help improve the coverage, consistency and reliability of business data used in the preparation of official statistics.
What is the Statistical Business Register?
A Statistical Business Register is a central database containing information on statistical units involved in economic activities within a defined geographical area. Unlike a one-time database, an SBR is designed to be regularly updated so that it can reflect changes in the business population.
The register can include businesses, enterprises, establishments and other economic units, along with important characteristics and information about the relationships between different units.
An effective SBR serves as an important foundation for an economic statistics system. It helps statistical agencies identify the population of economic units that may be covered by surveys and other statistical exercises.
Supporting Economic Surveys and Business Statistics

Strengthening India’s Statistical Infrastructure
The MoU between the Ministry of MSME and MoSPI represents an institutional effort to improve the availability and use of business-related information for statistical purposes. The integration of relevant information from the Udyam Registration ecosystem with the national statistical framework is intended to support better coverage and more consistent business data.
