Union Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has begun an official visit to Singapore from October 9 to 11, 2026, aimed at strengthening economic cooperation, attracting investments and expanding business partnerships between India and Singapore. The visit will feature high-level meetings with Singapore’s political leadership, leading global investors, financial institutions and prominent business representatives.
The engagements are expected to reinforce the India-Singapore Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and translate the strong bilateral relationship into tangible economic opportunities across several priority sectors.
High-Level Meetings with Singapore’s Leadership
During her visit, Finance Minister Sitharaman will meet Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong and Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan.
The discussions will focus on advancing cooperation in areas of mutual interest and implementing the outcomes of the India-Singapore Ministerial Roundtable (ISMR). Key areas of engagement include trade and investment, digital financial connectivity, capital markets, taxation, semiconductors, advanced manufacturing, skill development and aviation.
These discussions are expected to strengthen institutional cooperation, encourage greater private-sector participation and identify new avenues for collaboration in emerging and established industries.
Singapore Remains a Major Investor in India
Singapore continues to play a significant role in India’s investment landscape. According to the figures provided by the Ministry of Finance, the country accounted for approximately USD 194.68 billion in cumulative foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows into India between April 2000 and March 2026, making it India’s largest source of FDI.
Major Singapore-based institutional investors, including the Government of Singapore Investment Corporation (GIC) and Temasek Holdings, have substantial investments across various segments of the Indian economy.
The Finance Minister’s visit will seek to build on this established investment relationship by encouraging fresh capital flows, strengthening investor confidence and expanding opportunities for long-term partnerships.
Engagement with Global Investors and Financial Institutions
An important component of the visit will be direct interaction with the investment community. Sitharaman will participate in a roundtable with hedge fund and portfolio fund managers, alongside a series of Government-to-Business (G2B) meetings involving investors, financial institutions and business leaders.
These engagements will provide a platform to discuss India’s economic growth prospects, investment opportunities and the changing global economic and financial environment. They will also enable international investors to exchange views on the country’s policy framework and potential areas for expanding their presence in India.
The Finance Minister is also scheduled to hold individual meetings with senior executives of leading global financial institutions, investment companies and healthcare businesses.
The organisations represented in these engagements include GIC, Temasek Holdings, DBS Bank, Standard Chartered Bank, British International Investment, IHH Healthcare, Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group (MUFG), B Capital and HPS Investment Partners. She will also meet the Chairperson of Skandinaviska Enskilda Banken (SEB), a Director on the Board of Mitsui & Co., and the Executive Chairman and Founding Partner of TPG.
The discussions are expected to explore investment opportunities, business expansion and partnerships across sectors with significant growth potential.
NIIF and GIFT City to Support Investment Opportunities
India’s investment platforms, particularly the National Investment and Infrastructure Fund (NIIF) and Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City), are expected to feature as potential channels for greater participation by Singaporean investors.
These platforms can facilitate investments through specialised funds, investment vehicles and other financial arrangements, creating additional opportunities for Singaporean capital to participate in India’s development.
The Ministry of Finance, working with relevant ministries and industry bodies, will also facilitate connections between interested Singaporean investors and Indian businesses, financial institutions and state governments. The objective is to provide the necessary support to advance promising investment proposals and convert discussions into actionable projects.
Strengthening Bilateral Economic Ties
The three-day visit highlights India’s continued commitment to deepening its Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with Singapore. By bringing political leaders, investors and business executives together, the engagement seeks to strengthen economic links and encourage greater cross-border investment.
With cooperation spanning finance, technology, manufacturing, healthcare, skills and infrastructure, the visit is expected to provide fresh momentum to India-Singapore economic relations and create opportunities for sustainable growth and mutually beneficial business partnerships.
