The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), functioning under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, has successfully facilitated the first-ever air shipment of Neelam and Totapuri mangoes from Karnataka to the Maldives. The milestone export, flagged off on July 30, 2026, is expected to boost the international presence of Karnataka’s late-season mango varieties while opening new opportunities for Indian fruit exporters and farmers.
The consignment, weighing one metric tonne, consisted of premium-quality Neelam and Totapuri mangoes sourced directly from growers associated with Prakruthimaya Farmers Producer Company Ltd. in KGF Taluk of Karnataka’s Kolar district. The shipment was exported by Ahalya Devi Ventures, led by entrepreneur Mrs. Ashwini A, a newly registered woman exporter, highlighting the increasing role of women in India’s agricultural export sector.
Strengthening India’s Mango Export Basket
The export is significant because it extends India’s mango export season by promoting varieties harvested later than the country’s traditional export window. While many popular mango varieties reach markets earlier in the season, Neelam and Totapuri are harvested from late June through July, allowing exporters to cater to overseas demand even after peak production has ended.
During the flag-off ceremony, APEDA Chairman Shri Abhishek Dev, IAS, praised the collaborative efforts of farmers, the Farmer Producer Company (FPC), exporters and other stakeholders who made the shipment possible. He said such initiatives help expand market access for Indian mangoes, create fresh export opportunities for late-season varieties and improve farmers’ earnings through better price realisation.
Farmer Producer Companies Driving Export Growth
The shipment also demonstrates the growing importance of Farmer Producer Companies in connecting small farmers with international markets. By organising production, maintaining quality standards and aggregating produce, FPCs enable farmers to participate in export supply chains that were previously difficult to access individually.
According to APEDA, farmers associated with the exporting Farmer Producer Company earned more than 50 percent higher returns through the export initiative compared to sales in conventional domestic markets. The higher income reflects the advantages of direct procurement, improved market linkages and export-oriented marketing strategies.
Officials believe such successful export models can encourage more farmers to adopt quality-focused cultivation practices while increasing participation in global agricultural trade.
Late-Season Mangoes Find New Markets
Neelam mangoes are known for their rich aroma, sweet taste and juicy pulp, making them suitable for fresh consumption as well as desserts, smoothies and beverages. Totapuri mangoes, distinguished by their elongated shape and sweet-tangy flavour, are widely used for both table consumption and food processing.
The export of these varieties to the Maldives highlights the growing demand for premium Indian fruits in neighbouring international markets. Their availability during the later part of the mango season offers importers an extended supply period, helping India strengthen its position as a reliable mango exporter.
Women Entrepreneurs Enter Agri-Export Sector
Another notable aspect of the shipment is the role played by a first-time woman exporter. The successful export by Ahalya Devi Ventures reflects the increasing participation of women entrepreneurs in India’s agri-export ecosystem.
Government agencies have been encouraging greater involvement of women-led enterprises in agricultural exports by facilitating market access, improving export infrastructure and supporting compliance with international quality standards. Such initiatives are expected to broaden participation in global trade while generating new employment and business opportunities.
Expanding Opportunities for Karnataka’s Horticulture
Karnataka is one of India’s leading horticultural states, producing a wide range of fruits, vegetables and plantation crops. The successful export of Neelam and Totapuri mangoes showcases the state’s potential to supply premium-quality produce to overseas markets beyond the traditional export season.
The initiative is also expected to inspire more Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs), Farmer Producer Companies (FPCs), exporters and agri-entrepreneurs to explore international markets for high-value horticultural products. Stronger export linkages can help diversify agricultural income sources while promoting value addition and quality improvement.
APEDA’s Continued Export Promotion Efforts
APEDA continues to work closely with state governments, exporters, Farmer Producer Organizations, Farmer Producer Companies and other stakeholders to strengthen India’s agricultural export ecosystem. Its efforts include improving export infrastructure, facilitating international market access, promoting quality certification and supporting exporters in meeting global standards.
The successful air shipment of Karnataka’s Neelam and Totapuri mangoes to the Maldives marks another step in expanding India’s agricultural exports. By creating better market opportunities for farmers, encouraging organised supply chains and promoting premium Indian produce overseas, the initiative reinforces the country’s broader objective of enhancing agricultural exports while ensuring sustainable income growth for farming communities.
