Union Minister for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, Jitan Ram Manjhi chaired a high-level review meeting in New Delhi to assess preparations for the upcoming Khadi Mahotsav 2024 and evaluate the performance of the Khadi and Village Industries (KVI) sector. The Khadi Mahotsav, scheduled to be organized in October this year by the Khadi and Village Industries Commission, aims to promote Khadi products and strengthen awareness about the importance of rural industries across the country.

During the meeting, the minister stressed the need to expand the reach and impact of government schemes associated with the Khadi and Village Industries sector. He emphasized that a focused and result-oriented implementation strategy is essential to improve employment opportunities and strengthen the rural economy.

Mr. Manjhi highlighted that Khadi is not merely a fabric but a symbol of India’s heritage, self-reliance, and sustainable development. He said the promotion of Khadi can play a major role in generating employment in villages, particularly for artisans, weavers, and small entrepreneurs. According to him, encouraging the use of Khadi products among the public would directly contribute to improving livelihoods in rural areas.

The minister also called for wider publicity campaigns to popularize Khadi among people of all age groups. He suggested that awareness drives, exhibitions, and promotional activities should be organized at various levels to increase public participation in the Khadi movement. He added that the Khadi Mahotsav 2024 would provide an important platform for showcasing the craftsmanship and creativity of rural artisans from different parts of the country.

Officials present in the meeting reviewed the progress made in various initiatives under the KVI sector and discussed strategies to further improve production, marketing, and distribution networks. The discussions also focused on enhancing the visibility of Khadi products in domestic and international markets through innovative branding and digital outreach.

The government has been consistently encouraging the growth of the Khadi sector as part of its broader vision for rural development and self-employment generation. Over the years, Khadi has evolved from a symbol of India’s freedom movement into a modern and eco-friendly textile choice that appeals to consumers seeking sustainable products.

Experts believe that the increasing popularity of handwoven and organic fabrics has created new opportunities for the Khadi industry. With rising consumer awareness about environmentally friendly products, Khadi has gained recognition not only in India but also in global markets. The upcoming Khadi Mahotsav is expected to further strengthen this momentum by connecting artisans directly with buyers and promoting indigenous products.

The Khadi and Village Industries Commission has been playing a crucial role in supporting rural industries by providing training, financial assistance, and marketing support to artisans and entrepreneurs. Through various government initiatives, thousands of people in rural areas have benefited from employment and skill development opportunities linked to Khadi and village industries.

Mr. Manjhi reiterated that the success of Khadi initiatives depends on collective efforts involving government agencies, industry stakeholders, and the public. He urged citizens to adopt Khadi products in their daily lives and support the “Vocal for Local” movement. He said that increasing the use of Khadi would not only preserve India’s traditional craftsmanship but also create sustainable livelihoods for rural communities.

The Khadi Mahotsav 2024 is expected to attract artisans, entrepreneurs, policymakers, and consumers from across the country, making it a significant event for promoting India’s traditional industries and strengthening the rural economy.
