The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has intensified its efforts against illicit drug trafficking, seizing a combined 15.59 kg of Amphetamine, Cocaine and Heroin in three separate intelligence-led operations carried out on September 29 and 30, 2026. Five people were arrested in connection with the seizures under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.
The operations, conducted across Madhya Pradesh, Telangana and Punjab, highlight the use of different transportation routes and concealment techniques by suspected drug traffickers. According to the DRI, the seizures were made following specific intelligence inputs and coordinated surveillance.
Amphetamine Seized from Vehicle in Madhya Pradesh
In one of the operations on September 30, the DRI, in coordination with the Central Bureau of Narcotics (CBN), intercepted a Mahindra Thar at the Ujjain–Dewas Toll Plaza in Madhya Pradesh. The vehicle was suspected of transporting Amphetamine.
When officers signalled the vehicle to stop, the driver allegedly breached the barricade and attempted to flee. A pursuit followed for nearly one-and-a-half hours, after which the vehicle was intercepted near Bicholi Mardana in Indore.
A detailed search revealed that the suspected contraband had been concealed inside the spare tyre mounted on the rear door of the vehicle. Officers recovered 21 packets containing 7.116 kg of a whitish-yellow crystalline substance. Field testing subsequently indicated the presence of Amphetamine.
The suspected Amphetamine and the vehicle were seized, while all three occupants of the vehicle were arrested under the NDPS Act.
Cocaine Found Inside Chocolate Tubes
In a separate operation conducted on September 29, DRI officers at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad intercepted an Indian passenger arriving from Doha. The interception was based on intelligence regarding the suspected smuggling of Cocaine.
During an examination of the passenger’s cabin baggage, officers noticed seven chocolate tubes that appeared to be significantly heavier than their stated weight. Upon opening the tubes, they discovered 207 light-yellow, oval-shaped capsules concealed alongside the chocolates.
The capsules contained a white powdery substance that tested positive for Cocaine using a Narcotic Drug Detection Kit. The operation resulted in the recovery and seizure of 4.9 kg of Cocaine. The passenger was arrested under the NDPS Act, 1985.
Heroin Recovered in Punjab
The third operation also took place on September 29, when DRI officers acted on intelligence concerning the transportation of narcotic drugs near Phillaur, on the outskirts of Jalandhar in Punjab.
The officers conducted surveillance and checked several vehicles in the vicinity of a bridge over the Sutlej River. During the operation, they identified the suspect travelling as a passenger in a rental car-pooling taxi.
A personal search led to the recovery of a blue backpack kept on the suspect’s lap. The bag contained three packets, each holding two smaller packets. The substance inside the packets tested positive for Heroin using a field-testing kit.
A total of 3.574 kg of Heroin was recovered and seized, and the person carrying the suspected contraband was arrested under the NDPS Act.
The three operations underscore the DRI’s intelligence-based strategy to identify and intercept suspected narcotics trafficking through different routes and concealment methods. The agency said it remains focused on disrupting organised drug-trafficking networks and preventing the illegal movement of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances across the country.
