India and Chile have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral economic ties, with both sides stepping up efforts to advance negotiations on a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA). The development came during a meeting between Commerce Secretary Shri Rajesh Agrawal and Ms. Paula Estévez Weinstein, Vice-Minister of International Economic Relations of the Republic of Chile, in Santiago on August 26.
The discussions focused on taking forward the ongoing India–Chile CEPA negotiations and creating a framework that can provide greater market access and commercially meaningful opportunities for businesses in both countries.
India Stresses Balanced Economic Partnership
During the meeting, India reiterated its commitment to an open, sustained and balanced approach towards strengthening its economic relationship with Chile. The two countries share strong ties as members of the Global South and have increasingly aligned strategic interests, providing a solid foundation for expanding economic cooperation.
The discussions highlighted the importance of ensuring that the proposed CEPA reflects the shared priorities of both countries while delivering tangible benefits to businesses, investors and people.
India emphasised that the agreement should provide equitable outcomes and contribute to a stronger and more resilient bilateral economic partnership.
Focus on Key Growth Sectors
The Commerce Secretary highlighted significant opportunities for expanding cooperation across several sectors. These include healthcare, pharmaceuticals, energy, minerals, agriculture, machinery and engineering.
Greater engagement in these areas could help Indian and Chilean companies explore new markets, establish stronger commercial partnerships and diversify their supply chains. Enhanced cooperation in sectors such as minerals and energy could also contribute to strengthening long-term economic resilience, while collaboration in healthcare and pharmaceuticals could create opportunities for technology sharing and expanded business engagement.
Agriculture, machinery and engineering were also identified as areas with considerable potential for increased trade and investment.
CEPA to Give Fresh Momentum to Bilateral Trade
India and Chile have been working towards deepening their economic relationship through stronger trade and investment linkages. The successful conclusion of the CEPA negotiations is expected to provide fresh momentum to this growing partnership by establishing a broader and more predictable framework for economic engagement.
The agreement could open additional avenues for companies from both countries to expand their commercial presence. It is also expected to encourage greater investment and cooperation in emerging areas, including technology, talent development and resilient supply chains.
For businesses, a comprehensive economic agreement could help strengthen market opportunities while facilitating deeper integration between the two economies.
India Targets Conclusion This Year
India has expressed its intention to conclude the CEPA negotiations within 2026. New Delhi has maintained that the objective is to establish a balanced and mutually beneficial agreement that delivers commercially meaningful and equitable outcomes for both sides.
The latest meeting reflects the continued engagement between the two countries as negotiators work towards resolving outstanding issues and developing a framework acceptable to both parties.
The proposed CEPA is being viewed as an important instrument for translating the broader India–Chile strategic relationship into concrete economic opportunities. By expanding trade and investment while promoting cooperation in technology, skills and supply-chain resilience, the agreement could strengthen the foundations of the bilateral economic partnership.
Stronger India–Chile Economic Ties
The meeting in Santiago underlined the shared determination of India and Chile to build on their expanding relationship. With both countries seeking greater economic opportunities and stronger international partnerships, the CEPA could become a key platform for advancing bilateral commerce.
As negotiations continue, the emphasis remains on achieving an agreement that balances the interests of both economies and creates sustainable opportunities for businesses and people. Its conclusion within the year would mark a significant step towards a deeper, more diversified and mutually beneficial India–Chile economic partnership.
