India has taken another significant step in expanding the global reach of its agricultural exports by hosting its first-ever Indian Mango Promotion Events in Iceland. Organised by the Embassy of India in Reykjavik in collaboration with the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), the events were held on 24 June 2026 in Reykjavik and on 25 June 2026 in Akureyri, North Iceland. The initiative aimed to introduce Icelandic consumers and businesses to India’s premium mango varieties while strengthening bilateral trade ties.

The promotional events attracted a wide range of participants, including importers, diplomats, representatives of Icelandic businesses and officials from the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Iceland. The gatherings provided an ideal platform for showcasing the quality, diversity and export potential of Indian mangoes while fostering commercial partnerships between the two countries.

Addressing the audience, Ambassador R. Ravindra highlighted India’s reputation as the world’s leading producer of mangoes and emphasized the distinctive qualities of Indian varieties. He noted that India’s mangoes are celebrated worldwide for their exceptional taste, aroma and quality, and expressed confidence that Iceland could emerge as a promising market for Indian exporters.

Director of Trade Agreements at Iceland’s Ministry for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Sveinn K. Einarsson, underlined the opportunities created by the India–EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA). He stated that the agreement could facilitate greater imports of Indian agricultural products, particularly mangoes, by strengthening trade cooperation and improving market access between India and Iceland.

Echoing similar views, Secretary General of the Icelandic Federation of Trade, Mr. Ólafur Stephensen, observed that interest among Icelandic businesses in India has been steadily growing. He highlighted the significant potential for increasing imports of Indian agricultural products and noted that premium Indian mangoes could find a strong consumer base in Iceland.

During the events, Second Secretary Ms. Anisha Tomar delivered a detailed presentation on India’s mango industry. She highlighted India’s position as the world’s largest producer of mangoes and outlined various initiatives undertaken by the Government of India to boost exports through quality assurance measures, improved market access and international promotional campaigns.

A major attraction of the events was the tasting session featuring four of India’s finest mango varieties—Dasheri, Chausa, Langra and Kesar. Guests appreciated the fruits for their rich flavour, distinctive aroma and superior quality. The tasting experience generated considerable interest among importers and business representatives, offering them firsthand exposure to the unique characteristics that distinguish Indian mangoes in global markets.

The promotional campaign also highlighted Iceland’s growing demand for mangoes. The country currently sources most of its mango imports from Thailand, Brazil, Cambodia, Ghana and Peru, with Thailand accounting for nearly USD 1 million of Iceland’s total mango imports valued at approximately USD 3.3 million in 2025. This existing demand presents a significant opportunity for Indian exporters seeking to diversify their international markets.

Interactions conducted by the Indian Mission with local consumers revealed that mangoes enjoy widespread popularity in Iceland. Icelanders frequently consume the fruit in smoothies, desserts and fruit salads, indicating strong market potential for premium Indian varieties. The positive response received during the promotion events suggests that Indian mangoes could successfully establish a presence in Iceland’s retail and hospitality sectors.

The initiative reflects India’s broader strategy to expand agricultural exports to new international markets through targeted promotional activities and stronger institutional partnerships. By introducing Icelandic consumers and importers to India’s premium mango varieties, the Embassy of India and APEDA have laid the foundation for enhanced trade cooperation and new export opportunities.

As India continues to strengthen its global agricultural footprint, the successful mango promotion events in Iceland mark an important milestone in deepening economic engagement between the two countries. The initiative is expected to encourage greater imports of Indian mangoes, benefiting Indian farmers, exporters and consumers in Iceland alike while further reinforcing the growing India-Iceland economic partnership.
