News Delhi, The Ministry of Ayush has initiated large-scale preparations for the International Day of Yoga 2026, convening a high-level Inter-Ministerial Committee meeting in New Delhi to ensure coordinated execution and wider participation across the country and globally.
Chairing the meeting, Union Minister Prataprao Jadhav emphasized that yoga has evolved into a nationwide people’s movement promoting holistic health and wellness. He highlighted that the upcoming edition of IDY will adopt a “whole-of-government and whole-of-society” approach, ensuring participation from institutions, rural communities, youth, and underserved regions.
Referring to India’s global leadership, the Minister noted that since its adoption by the United Nations General Assembly in 2014, International Day of Yoga has expanded its footprint to over 190 countries under the leadership of Narendra Modi. He stressed the need to maximize participation in the Common Yoga Protocol on June 21 while integrating yoga into schools, workplaces, and healthcare systems.
Senior officials from various ministries, yoga institutions, and experts attended the meeting to align strategies for IDY 2026. Key focus areas include digital outreach, community engagement, timely implementation, and enhanced visibility through media and institutional networks.
Sibi George, Secretary (West), Ministry of External Affairs, reaffirmed India’s global commitment, stating that Indian missions worldwide will lead outreach efforts through embassies and consulates. He highlighted successful international initiatives such as the ongoing yoga program in Japan, reflecting growing global acceptance of yoga as a tool for health and inner balance.
Welcoming participants, Rajesh Kotecha underlined that yoga is not just a one-day celebration but a sustained global campaign rooted in India’s cultural heritage. He emphasized that IDY continues to expand as a global health movement promoting balance and well-being.
Adding perspective, H. R. Nagendra noted the exponential growth in participation, stating that over 26 crore people joined last year’s celebrations and the number is expected to cross 30 crore in 2026. He highlighted increasing scientific validation of yoga in preventing and managing non-communicable diseases.
Swami Bharat Bhushan emphasized the importance of making yoga a daily lifestyle practice, noting its transformative potential for physical, mental, and emotional well-being.
The Ministry also presented a comprehensive roadmap outlining thematic campaigns, outreach strategies, and institutional participation. Discussions focused on engaging youth, leveraging digital platforms, and integrating yoga into national health initiatives.
With a strong push for inclusivity, innovation, and global collaboration, the government aims to make the 12th International Day of Yoga the largest and most impactful edition yet—further positioning India as a global leader in promoting wellness, harmony, and sustainable living.
