Union Minister for Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal will undertake a week-long visit to the United States from September 29 to October 5, 2026, with a focus on strengthening India’s global trade engagement, advancing bilateral economic ties with the United States and promoting investment opportunities for Indian businesses.
A key part of the minister’s visit will be his participation in the G20 Trade Ministers’ Meeting scheduled to take place in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on September 30 and October 1. Goyal will attend the meeting at the invitation of the United States Trade Representative. Trade ministers and representatives from G20 member countries are expected to participate in discussions on strengthening international trade cooperation.
During the G20 meeting, India is expected to reiterate its support for a rules-based and inclusive global trading system. The country will advocate for a multilateral trade framework that is open, transparent, equitable and non-discriminatory, with the World Trade Organization (WTO) continuing to play a central role.
India is also expected to emphasise the importance of preserving adequate policy space for developing economies while shaping global trade rules. The discussions will provide an opportunity for India to engage with other G20 members on issues affecting international commerce, economic growth and the interests of developing countries.
On the sidelines of the G20 meeting, Goyal will hold bilateral discussions with trade ministers from participating countries. These engagements are expected to explore opportunities for expanding trade and economic cooperation while supporting a broad range of stakeholders, including farmers, fishermen, women entrepreneurs, startups, micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and other businesses.
Focus on India-US Bilateral Trade Agreement
The India-US trade relationship will be another major focus of Goyal’s visit. The minister is scheduled to meet his American counterpart to discuss ongoing negotiations for an India-US Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA).
The discussions will form part of continued efforts to develop a balanced and mutually beneficial trade arrangement between the two countries. Both sides are also working towards an interim trade agreement in accordance with the Joint Statement issued on February 7, 2026.
The proposed agreement is expected to provide greater opportunities for businesses in both countries while strengthening bilateral trade and economic cooperation.
Engagement with American Businesses
Goyal will also hold discussions with senior executives of leading American companies during his engagements in Milwaukee and Chicago. Representatives from sectors such as manufacturing, consumer goods, agribusiness, retail and technology are expected to participate.
The minister will highlight India’s growing potential as a manufacturing and investment destination and outline opportunities available to American companies seeking to expand their operations and partnerships in the country.
Business roundtables involving startups, established companies and innovative enterprises will also form part of the visit. These interactions are aimed at encouraging greater collaboration between American and Indian businesses, including partnerships involving technology, manufacturing, investment and innovation.
Tributes to National Icons
During his stay in Chicago, Goyal will pay floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti. He will also pay tribute to Swami Vivekananda and interact with professional associations representing members of the Indian community in the United States.
The visit comes at a time when India is seeking to deepen its economic partnerships with major global economies while playing a more active role in shaping international trade discussions.
Through his participation in the G20 Trade Ministers’ Meeting, bilateral engagements and interactions with American industry leaders, Goyal’s visit is expected to provide an opportunity to advance India’s trade priorities and strengthen economic cooperation with the United States and other G20 partners.
