India and Afghanistan held a virtual meeting of the India–Afghanistan Joint Working Group (JWG) on Trade, Commerce and Investment on September 1, 2026, with both sides reaffirming their commitment to deepening bilateral economic engagement and facilitating smoother trade between the two countries.

The meeting brought together officials from India and Afghanistan representing key areas including commerce, industry, customs, regulatory bodies and diplomatic missions. Discussions focused on addressing existing trade-related challenges and identifying practical measures to expand commercial cooperation.

Focus on Trade Facilitation and Customs Cooperation

A major area of discussion was trade facilitation, with both sides examining ways to make cross-border trade more efficient. Customs cooperation was also discussed, including the need for stronger institutional coordination and improved exchange of trade and customs-related information.

Enhanced data sharing between the relevant authorities is expected to help improve transparency, streamline procedures and facilitate the movement of goods between the two countries.

Visa and Financial Cooperation

The two sides also discussed visa facilitation for Afghan traders, recognising the importance of easier business travel in supporting bilateral commerce. Improved access and smoother procedures for business visitors can help strengthen direct engagement between companies and traders.

Banking and financial cooperation also featured prominently in the discussions. Both sides explored ways to address financial and payment-related challenges that can affect trade flows and business transactions.

Agriculture and Pharmaceuticals Among Key Sectors

Agricultural trade and pharmaceuticals emerged as important sectors for closer cooperation. India and Afghanistan discussed strengthening regulatory coordination in these areas to facilitate trade while ensuring compliance with applicable standards.

The two sides also considered opportunities to expand commercial engagement in other sectors, including energy. Greater cooperation in agriculture, pharmaceuticals and energy could provide additional avenues for businesses from both countries to explore mutually beneficial opportunities.

Investment and Business Engagement

Investment promotion was another important component of the JWG discussions. Both countries agreed on the importance of encouraging greater investment and strengthening business-to-business engagement.

The meeting also considered measures related to trade promotion and tariff concessions that could contribute to expanding bilateral commerce. Greater institutional support and sustained interaction between businesses were identified as important elements for creating stronger commercial linkages.

Connectivity and Port-Related Issues

Cargo connectivity and port-related matters were also taken up during the meeting. Efficient transportation and reliable trade routes are critical to supporting the movement of goods and improving the competitiveness of bilateral trade.

India and Afghanistan discussed ways to enhance trade connectivity and address issues affecting cargo movement. Improved logistical arrangements could provide businesses with greater opportunities to access markets and strengthen supply chains.

Commitment to Continued Engagement

Both sides agreed to pursue follow-up action in the areas identified during the meeting. These include enhanced customs and data-sharing cooperation, regulatory coordination in pharmaceuticals and agriculture, better trade connectivity and stronger efforts to promote investment and business partnerships.

The meeting was conducted in a warm and constructive atmosphere, reflecting the shared interest of India and Afghanistan in maintaining regular institutional dialogue on economic matters.

The September 1 meeting underlined the importance of continued engagement in addressing practical trade issues and creating an enabling environment for businesses. India and Afghanistan reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation in trade, commerce and investment and agreed to remain engaged on the matters discussed during the JWG.

The discussions are expected to provide a framework for further cooperation across multiple economic sectors while supporting efforts to build stronger and more sustainable commercial ties between the two countries.
