Across rural India, traditional skills and locally available resources are emerging as powerful foundations for entrepreneurship and livelihood generation. By combining age-old knowledge with modern training, technology, finance and market support, rural communities are developing enterprises that create income while making productive use of local resources.
The Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC), under the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME), is playing an important role in this transformation. Through initiatives including the Khadi Vikas Yojana (KVY), Gramodyog Vikas Yojana (GVY) and Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP), the institution is helping artisans and aspiring entrepreneurs strengthen their skills and establish sustainable village-based businesses.
Beekeeping Becomes a Source of Livelihood
In Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu, Shri T. Ajin has transformed his expertise in beekeeping into a honey-based enterprise through Marthandam Honey Products. His unit produces AGMARK-certified honey as well as value-added honey products blended with dry fruits.
However, his entrepreneurial journey extends beyond his own business. Shri Ajin trains farmers, especially people from economically weaker sections and SC/ST communities, in scientific and modern beekeeping techniques. He has also participated in programmes at the state, regional and district levels and shared his experience through All India Radio and Doordarshan.
His journey demonstrates how a rural entrepreneur can generate employment and simultaneously encourage others to develop their own livelihood opportunities.
Vetiver Provides a New Business Opportunity
For Shri B. Sundaraj, vetiver has become the foundation of an enterprise focused on herbal and fragrant products. Through his Pure Health Herbal Agarbathi Unit, he manufactures agarbathi, herbal products, Vetiver Agarbathi and Vetiver Samburani.
With assistance under the Gramodyog Vikas Yojana during 2024–25, Shri Sundaraj enhanced his production capabilities and diversified his product portfolio. His experience highlights the potential of locally available natural resources when combined with traditional knowledge and appropriate entrepreneurial support.
Converting Banana Fibre into Value-Added Products
Shri M. Murugesan has taken a different approach by turning an agricultural resource into a commercial opportunity. Through his Banana Fibre Fancy Articles Making Unit under PMEGP and Om Banana Craft Private Limited, he uses banana fibre to manufacture attractive and useful products.
His work has received recognition through Central and State Government awards. He also participates in exhibitions and awareness programmes and shares his knowledge through All India Radio, Doordarshan and various training initiatives.
The enterprise illustrates how agricultural materials can be transformed into value-added products while creating opportunities for rural employment and entrepreneurship.
Honey Mission Expands Scientific Beekeeping
The Honey Mission, launched in 2017, is another major initiative aimed at developing beekeeping as a livelihood activity. The programme promotes scientific beekeeping among farmers, tribal communities and unemployed youth.
Beneficiaries are provided training as well as bee boxes, live bee colonies and necessary toolkits. Such support enables participants to acquire technical knowledge and gradually develop beekeeping into a sustainable income-generating activity.
According to KVIC, approximately 2.46 lakh bee boxes and bee colonies were distributed across the country between 2017–18 and 2025–26. The initiative contributed to around 5,500 metric tonnes of honey production during 2025–26.
Beekeeping Offers Wider Agricultural Benefits
The importance of beekeeping extends beyond honey production. Bees contribute significantly to pollination, connecting the activity with agricultural productivity and biodiversity conservation.
Beekeepers cultivate Indian honey bees across several states, including Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Odisha and the North-Eastern region. For many communities, beekeeping can provide an additional source of income while opening avenues for broader rural enterprise development.
Strengthening the Rural Enterprise Ecosystem
The experiences of Ajin, Sundaraj and Murugesan demonstrate how traditional knowledge can evolve into modern businesses when supported by finance, technology, training and market opportunities.
KVIC’s interventions are helping rural entrepreneurs move from individual skills to organised enterprises and from raw local resources to value-added products. This approach not only supports livelihoods but also encourages innovation, resource utilisation and self-employment in villages.
As rural India continues to explore new economic opportunities, the integration of traditional skills with modern enterprise capabilities is creating a pathway from local knowledge to sustainable businesses and wider livelihood generation.
