कोका-कोला के जाने के बाद आया कोला ब्रांड –
सूत्रों के अनुसार पता चला हैं की सरकार पेय के रूप में लोकप्रिय, डबल सेवन 1977 में तत्कालीन सत्तारूढ़ जनता पार्टी की एक महत्वाकांक्षी परियोजना थी। उसी वर्ष कोका-कोला द्वारा भारतीय बाजार छोड़ने के बाद भारत सरकार को अपने कोला ब्रांड के साथ आने के लिए मजबूर होना पड़ा था। सरकार की नीतियों में परिवर्तन हुआ। नई नीति के अनुसार, सभी बाजार सहभागियों को एक भारतीय इकाई के साथ साझेदारी करनी थी। रिपोर्ट के अनुसार, कोका-कोला ने अपनी गुप्त रेसिपी को किसी अन्य कंपनी के साथ साझा करने की शर्त को टालने के लिए बाजार से बाहर निकलने का फैसला किया।
जनता सरकार ने एक तीर से दो निशाने साधे –
कोका-कोला के बाहर निकलने से पैदा हुए खालीपन को भरने के लिए और उन लोगों को रोजगार देने के लिए जो बाहर निकलने के कारण अपनी नौकरी खो चुके हैं, भारत सरकार ने अपना कोला ब्रांड लॉन्च करने के लिए कदम बढ़ाया। जनता सरकार ने भी इसे इंदिरा गांधी द्वारा लगाए गए आपातकाल की समाप्ति के उपलक्ष्य में एक अवसर के रूप में देखा। इसलिए ’77’ नाम से एक सरकारी कोल्ड ड्रिंक लॉन्च की गई। कोल्ड ड्रिंक का नाम ‘डबल सेवन’ रखा गया था। हालाँकि, कैंपा कोला और थम्स अप जैसे मौजूदा खिलाड़ियों के खिलाफ पेय अच्छा प्रदर्शन नहीं कर सका। इसके अलावा, जनता सरकार का पतन और इंदिरा गांधी का पुनरुत्थान ब्रांड के ताबूत में आखिरी कील साबित हुआ।
