Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science & Technology and Earth Sciences, Dr. Jitendra Singh, has called for a nationwide Jan Andolan (People’s Movement) against cancer, diabetes, obesity and other lifestyle-related diseases, emphasizing that India’s response to the growing burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) must extend beyond hospitals and become a collective public effort.
Speaking at the launch of the book UNBROKEN: My Battle with Cancer and the Will to Lead, authored by noted scientist and cancer survivor Dr. Akhilesh Gupta, the Minister stressed that prevention, early diagnosis and evidence-based healthcare are critical to reducing the impact of these diseases. The event was attended by leading scientists, medical professionals, researchers, senior government officials and members of the academic community.
Lifestyle Diseases Emerging as a Major Public Health Challenge
Dr. Jitendra Singh noted that India is witnessing a significant shift in its disease profile, with non-communicable diseases now posing one of the country’s greatest health challenges. Conditions such as cancer, diabetes, obesity, fatty liver disease and other metabolic disorders are becoming increasingly common, including among younger age groups.
He underlined that many forms of cancer can now be effectively treated or managed if detected at an early stage. Regular health screenings, timely diagnosis and immediate medical intervention, he said, can substantially improve survival rates while reducing treatment costs and complications.
The Minister urged citizens to make preventive healthcare a part of their daily lives instead of waiting until illness develops.
Healthy Habits Must Become a National Priority
Highlighting the importance of preventive healthcare, Dr. Jitendra Singh said balanced nutrition, regular physical activity and periodic health check-ups should become routine practices across the country. He observed that rising obesity and unhealthy lifestyles are major contributors to the growing burden of chronic diseases.
According to the Minister, building a healthier society requires lifestyle changes at the individual, family and community levels. He encouraged people to adopt healthier eating habits, remain physically active and undergo regular medical examinations to identify health risks before they become serious.
Warning Against Health Misinformation
A major concern raised during the event was the rapid spread of misinformation related to nutrition, disease management and medical treatments.
Dr. Jitendra Singh cautioned that unverified health advice and pseudoscientific claims often delay proper diagnosis and discourage patients from seeking timely treatment from qualified healthcare professionals. He emphasized that scientific communication has become increasingly important in an era where misleading information spreads quickly through digital platforms.
The Minister urged citizens to rely on evidence-based medical advice and consult trained healthcare professionals rather than following unproven remedies or unsupported health claims.
Science and Innovation Strengthening India’s Healthcare System
Highlighting the government’s focus on healthcare innovation, Dr. Jitendra Singh said India is steadily developing indigenous solutions tailored to its own healthcare needs. He referred to initiatives such as the Genome India Programme, advances in biotechnology and the development of affordable therapies for diseases including cancer.
He said these scientific efforts are helping make advanced medical treatments more accessible while strengthening India’s position as a global centre for healthcare innovation and biomanufacturing.
The Minister also pointed to flagship initiatives such as Ayushman Bharat, which have expanded access to quality healthcare while complementing investments in biomedical research, healthcare infrastructure and biotechnology.
Greater Collaboration Needed
Dr. Jitendra Singh stressed that scientific discoveries can deliver maximum public benefit only when government agencies, research institutions, universities, healthcare professionals and industry work together.
He called for stronger public-private partnerships to accelerate the translation of laboratory research into affordable healthcare solutions that can improve the quality of life for millions of people.
According to him, scientific progress should ultimately serve society by making healthcare more accessible, affordable and effective.
A Story of Courage and Hope
Speaking about Dr. Akhilesh Gupta’s book, the Minister described it as more than a personal account of surviving cancer. He said it reflects resilience, determination and unwavering faith in science while offering valuable lessons for patients, doctors, researchers, administrators and young professionals alike.
The book, he added, demonstrates how timely medical care, mental strength and trust in scientific treatment can help individuals overcome even life-threatening illnesses.
Health Essential for Viksit Bharat
Concluding his address, Dr. Jitendra Singh said that the vision of Viksit Bharat @2047 cannot be achieved without a healthy population. He appealed to every citizen to actively participate in a nationwide movement against lifestyle diseases by adopting healthy habits, encouraging regular health screenings, promoting scientific awareness and helping combat health misinformation.
He emphasized that disease prevention is not solely the responsibility of governments or healthcare providers but a shared national commitment requiring active participation from every section of society. Through collective action, informed decision-making and trust in science, India can significantly reduce the burden of non-communicable diseases and build a healthier future for generations to come.
