The Department of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare under the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare has commenced the two-day National Conference on Agriculture for Kharif Campaign 2026 at the NASC Complex, Pusa, New Delhi. The conference, being held on May 28 and 29, is chaired by Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan and brings together key stakeholders from across the country to discuss priorities and strategies for the upcoming Kharif season.
The conference was inaugurated in the presence of State Agriculture Ministers, senior officials of the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare, representatives from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), officials from States and Union Territories, agricultural scientists, and experts from allied sectors. The event serves as an important national platform for policy discussions, coordination, and planning aimed at strengthening India’s agricultural sector.
Over the next two days, the conference will witness extensive discussions on Kharif preparedness, agricultural productivity, climate-resilient farming practices, natural farming, pulses and oilseeds production, digital agriculture, agricultural finance, and risk management. The deliberations are expected to shape the roadmap for the forthcoming Kharif season while addressing challenges posed by climate change and evolving agricultural demands.
The conference has been designed around three major themes: Atmanirbharta, Diversification and Production Growth; Sustainability and Climate-Resilient Agriculture and Khet Bachao; and Infrastructure, Financing and Risk Management. These themes reflect the government’s focus on ensuring food security, enhancing farmers’ income, and building a more sustainable and resilient agricultural ecosystem.
State Governments and Union Territories have been grouped for structured thematic discussions and exchange of experiences. This collaborative approach is intended to encourage the sharing of best practices, innovative farming techniques, and successful policy interventions implemented in different regions. Officials and experts are also expected to review preparedness for the Kharif season and identify actionable strategies for improving productivity and resilience in agriculture.
A major focus of the conference is on strengthening climate-resilient agriculture. Discussions are being held on promoting sustainable farming methods, efficient water management, soil conservation, and adoption of technologies that can help farmers cope with climate variability. The promotion of natural farming and environmentally sustainable practices is also receiving significant attention during the deliberations.
The conference is further emphasizing the importance of self-reliance in agriculture through increased production of pulses and oilseeds. Efforts to reduce import dependence and enhance domestic output are being discussed as part of the broader vision of Atmanirbharta in agriculture. Participants are also examining strategies for crop diversification to improve farm profitability and ensure balanced agricultural growth.
Digital agriculture and technology-driven solutions are another key area of focus. Experts are discussing the role of digital platforms, precision farming, data-driven advisory systems, and modern agricultural technologies in enhancing productivity and improving farmers’ access to information and services. Strengthening agricultural extension services and outreach mechanisms is also part of the agenda.
In addition, the conference is highlighting the need for robust agricultural infrastructure, improved access to finance, and effective risk management mechanisms. Discussions are taking place on crop insurance, credit support, storage infrastructure, market linkages, and other measures aimed at protecting farmers from uncertainties and strengthening the rural economy.
The event will also review key learnings emerging from recent zonal consultations held across the country. These consultations have provided valuable insights into region-specific challenges and opportunities, which are expected to guide policy formulation and programme implementation for the Kharif season.
The National Conference on Agriculture for Kharif Campaign 2026 reflects the Government’s continued commitment to building a farmer-centric agricultural ecosystem aligned with the vision of a developed India and prosperous farmers. Through coordinated efforts between the Centre, States, scientific institutions, and stakeholders, the conference aims to pave the way for sustainable agricultural growth, improved productivity, and long-term resilience in the sector.
