Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal began the Spain leg of his official overseas visit on July 13 with a series of strategic engagements aimed at reinforcing economic cooperation between India and Spain. The visit comes at a landmark moment as the two nations celebrate 70 years of diplomatic relations alongside the India-Spain Dual Year of Culture, Tourism and Artificial Intelligence 2026.
The Minister’s packed schedule included bilateral meetings with senior Spanish government leaders, interactions with industry representatives, participation in the India-Spain Business Forum, and discussions with investment promotion agencies. The engagements reflected the growing importance of the bilateral relationship and the shared ambition to unlock new opportunities in trade, investment, innovation and industrial collaboration.
Focus on Expanding Trade and Investment
One of the key highlights of the visit was Shri Goyal’s meeting with Carlos Cuerpo Caballero, First Vice-President of the Government of Spain and Minister of Economy, Trade and Business. The discussions focused on strengthening commercial ties by encouraging greater trade, improving market access and promoting investment between the two countries.
The leaders explored opportunities for collaboration in sectors such as renewable energy, green hydrogen, advanced manufacturing, digital technologies, infrastructure and innovation. They also exchanged views on the ongoing India-European Union Free Trade Agreement negotiations and discussed ways to create a more resilient and diversified supply chain between India and Spain.
Both sides agreed to make greater use of the existing Fast Track Mechanism to facilitate investments and improve business confidence. They also looked forward to holding the next meeting of the India-Spain Joint Commission on Economic Cooperation later this year to maintain momentum in bilateral engagement.
Strengthening Industrial Collaboration
Shri Goyal also held discussions with Jordi Hereu Boher, Spain’s Minister of Industry and Tourism, focusing on expanding cooperation in manufacturing, clean technologies and industrial innovation.
The talks covered a broad range of sectors including sustainable manufacturing, mobility solutions, automotive production, railways, smart infrastructure and clean energy technologies. Both ministers highlighted the successful C-295 aircraft programme as an example of growing industrial cooperation under India’s “Make in India” initiative, demonstrating the potential for future joint manufacturing projects.
Tourism also emerged as an important area of cooperation, with both countries expressing confidence that the India-Spain Year of Culture, Tourism and Artificial Intelligence 2026 would further strengthen people-to-people connections while supporting economic growth.
Business Forum Highlights Investment Opportunities
A major attraction of the visit was the India-Spain Business Forum, jointly organised by FICCI, the Chamber of Commerce of Spain, the Spanish Confederation of Business Organizations (CEOE), and ICEX Spain Trade and Investment.
The forum brought together senior government officials, industry leaders and business executives from both nations to explore new business partnerships and investment opportunities.
During his keynote address, Shri Goyal highlighted India’s position as the world’s fastest-growing major economy and outlined the country’s investor-friendly reforms, expanding manufacturing base and rapidly growing digital economy.
He invited Spanish companies to deepen their presence in India and participate in sectors such as infrastructure, renewable energy, advanced manufacturing, digital technologies, innovation and emerging industries. The event also featured an interactive session where business leaders discussed ways to strengthen commercial partnerships and address future opportunities.
Boosting Investment Promotion
As part of his engagements, the Commerce Minister met senior officials of ICEX España Exportación e Inversiones, Spain’s national trade and investment promotion agency.
The discussions focused on enhancing bilateral investment flows, encouraging technology partnerships and creating stronger business linkages between Indian and Spanish enterprises. Both sides explored measures to facilitate greater participation of Spanish companies in India’s expanding economic landscape while also encouraging Indian businesses to explore opportunities in Spain.
Engagement with Indian Industry
At the conclusion of the day’s programme, Shri Goyal held a debriefing session with members of the Indian business delegation led by FICCI. The interaction provided an opportunity to review the outcomes of the visit, identify emerging business prospects and encourage Indian companies to expand their partnerships with Spanish firms.
The Minister urged industry representatives to leverage the positive momentum created by the visit and work towards building long-term commercial collaborations.
Partnership Enters a New Phase
The Spain visit underscored the growing strategic importance of India-Spain relations as both countries seek to diversify trade, strengthen industrial cooperation and promote innovation-driven growth.
With sustained political engagement, expanding business interest and stronger institutional mechanisms for investment facilitation, the discussions held during Shri Goyal’s visit are expected to pave the way for deeper economic cooperation. As India and Spain mark seven decades of diplomatic relations, both governments have reaffirmed their commitment to creating fresh opportunities for businesses, investors and people through a stronger and more dynamic economic partnership.
