India and Morocco are set to strengthen their economic and commercial partnership as Minister of State for Commerce and Industry and Electronics & Information Technology, Shri Jitin Prasada, undertakes an official visit to Morocco from August 24 to 25, 2026. The visit is expected to open new avenues for trade diversification, investment and deeper business-to-business cooperation between the two countries.
During his visit, Prasada will co-chair the 7th Session of the India–Morocco Joint Commission alongside H.E. Mr. Omar Hejira, Secretary of State to Morocco’s Minister of Industry and Trade, in charge of Foreign Trade. The meeting will review the progress of existing economic cooperation while exploring opportunities to broaden bilateral engagement.
Wide-Ranging Economic Agenda
The Joint Commission is expected to deliberate on several areas of mutual interest, including trade and market access, investment, industrial cooperation and customs procedures. Cooperation in fertilizer production and supply is also likely to receive particular attention, given the importance of fertilizers to India’s agricultural sector.
Other areas on the agenda include agriculture and food safety, pharmaceuticals and healthcare, energy and mining, renewable energy, digital transformation, transport and logistics, AYUSH, tourism, education and skill development. Discussions are expected to focus on practical measures that can expand commercial opportunities and strengthen institutional cooperation.
Food Safety Cooperation to Get Boost
A key outcome of the meeting is expected to be the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on food safety cooperation between Morocco’s National Office of Food Safety (ONSSA) and India’s Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).
The agreement is aimed at improving cooperation and information exchange concerning the safety and quality of imported food products. It will facilitate the sharing of information related to food testing laboratories, analytical techniques and technical expertise.
The proposed framework will also support exchanges concerning import procedures, quality control, sampling, testing, packaging and labelling. Such cooperation could help improve transparency and facilitate smoother trade in food products between the two countries.
Cultural Cooperation Also on Agenda
The two countries are also expected to sign a Cultural Exchange Programme covering the period 2026–2030. The programme will seek to expand cultural collaboration through exchanges of artists and professionals, participation in festivals and exhibitions, and cooperation in heritage conservation.
It is also expected to strengthen institutional links between museums, libraries and archival organisations in India and Morocco, adding a cultural dimension to the broader bilateral partnership.
Bilateral Trade Nears $4 Billion
India and Morocco have maintained longstanding relations with considerable scope for expanding trade and investment. Bilateral merchandise trade reached approximately USD 4 billion in 2025.
India’s major exports to Morocco include refined petroleum products, pharmaceuticals, vehicles, synthetic textiles, food products and spices. Morocco, meanwhile, is an important supplier of phosphates and fertilizers to India.
The ongoing discussions are expected to explore ways to diversify the trade basket and create greater market access for businesses in both countries.
Business Engagement to Drive New Opportunities
As part of the visit, Prasada will hold bilateral and high-level meetings with senior Moroccan leaders. He will also participate in the India–Morocco Joint Business Forum and interact with representatives of the Moroccan business community in Rabat.
The business-focused engagements are expected to identify opportunities for new investments, partnerships, joint ventures and expanded trade. Greater private-sector participation could provide additional momentum to the economic relationship.
Significance Ahead of 70th Diplomatic Anniversary
The visit comes ahead of the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between India and Morocco, which the two countries will commemorate in 2027. The milestone provides an important opportunity to further reinforce their longstanding partnership.
The Joint Commission and related agreements are expected to strengthen the institutional foundations of bilateral economic cooperation and provide fresh momentum to trade, investment, industrial collaboration and business-to-business engagement between India and Morocco.
