In a landmark development for India’s agricultural export sector, the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) has successfully facilitated the first international shipment of Geographical Indication (GI)-tagged Tezpur Litchi from Assam to Dubai. The export, flagged off on June 7, 2026, marks a significant step towards expanding global market access for premium agricultural products from the North Eastern Region.

The inaugural consignment, weighing one metric tonne, consisted of the renowned Tezpur Litchi, a fruit celebrated for its rich sweetness, vibrant red colour, distinctive fragrance and exceptional taste. Widely regarded as one of Assam’s finest horticultural products, Tezpur Litchi enjoys a strong reputation among consumers due to its superior quality and unique characteristics. The region is known for cultivating several popular varieties, including Bombaya, Bilati, Elaichi, Piyaji and Sahi, each offering a distinctive flavour profile.

The successful export highlights the growing international demand for India’s GI-certified agricultural products. The GI tag has played a crucial role in enhancing the identity and authenticity of Tezpur Litchi, helping it gain recognition in premium overseas markets. The development also underscores the immense potential of the North Eastern Region as a source of high-value agricultural commodities for global consumers.

The ceremonial flag-off event witnessed the presence of several dignitaries, including Tezpur MLA Shri Prithiraj Rava, Agriculture Production Commissioner of Assam Smt Aruna Rajoria, IAS, APEDA Chairman Shri Abhishek Dev, IAS, Sonitpur District Commissioner Shri Ananda Kumar Das, ACS, and representatives of M/s DMR Green Valley Agro Fresh Pvt. Ltd. Farmers, exporters, government officials and other stakeholders also participated in the event, reflecting the collaborative effort behind the initiative.

One of the most significant outcomes of the export venture has been the direct benefit to farmers. Growers associated with the export supply chain reportedly received nearly 10 percent higher prices compared to prevailing domestic market rates. This enhanced remuneration was achieved despite strong local demand for the fruit, demonstrating the economic advantages of accessing international markets. The initiative is expected to encourage more farmers to adopt export-oriented cultivation practices and become part of global agricultural value chains.

APEDA has been consistently working to strengthen agricultural exports from the North Eastern Region through a range of strategic interventions. These include infrastructure development, quality certification support, capacity-building programmes, market linkage initiatives and promotion of export-focused production systems. By collaborating closely with state governments, Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs), exporters and other stakeholders, APEDA has been creating opportunities for farmers to connect with international buyers and diversify their income sources.

The export of Tezpur Litchi to Dubai also reflects the broader efforts of the Government of India to promote region-specific products with unique geographical identities. As global consumers increasingly seek authentic and traceable food products, GI-tagged commodities are gaining greater acceptance in international markets. The success of this consignment is expected to open new avenues for larger exports in the coming years and strengthen Assam’s position in the global horticultural trade.

Established under the APEDA Act of 1985, APEDA functions under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry and is responsible for promoting exports of agricultural and processed food products. The organisation provides extensive support to farmers, exporters and FPOs through infrastructure assistance, quality development, market promotion and capacity-building measures.

The successful shipment of GI-tagged Tezpur Litchi to Dubai stands as a testament to the growing global appeal of India’s premium agricultural produce. It not only creates new opportunities for farmers in Assam but also reinforces India’s commitment to expanding agricultural exports and strengthening its presence in international food markets.
