Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Jitin Prasada has emphasized that India’s growing network of international trade partnerships is creating unprecedented opportunities for the country’s Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). Addressing the FICCI FLO National MSME Awards Ceremony in New Delhi, the Minister highlighted the crucial role of trade agreements in enhancing market access and boosting exports for Indian businesses.
Speaking at the event, Prasada noted that India is currently in the final stages of negotiating several Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) with major global economies and regional blocs. These include ongoing discussions with the European Union as well as countries such as the United States. According to him, these agreements are expected to significantly expand access to developed markets and strengthen India’s position in global trade.
The Minister underlined that MSMEs form the backbone of the Indian economy, contributing substantially to employment generation, manufacturing output, and exports. He said that the government is committed to creating an enabling environment that allows small businesses to compete effectively on the international stage.
“India’s expanding trade partnerships are opening doors to new markets and creating fresh opportunities for MSMEs to scale up their operations and increase exports,” Prasada said. He added that greater integration with global value chains would help Indian enterprises improve competitiveness, adopt advanced technologies, and enhance product quality.
The Minister pointed out that the government has undertaken several reforms in recent years to support the growth of MSMEs. These measures include easier access to credit, simplified regulatory processes, digital transformation initiatives, and targeted support for innovation and entrepreneurship. He stressed that these efforts, combined with enhanced market access through FTAs, would accelerate the growth trajectory of small and medium enterprises.
Prasada also highlighted the importance of women-led businesses and entrepreneurs in driving economic development. Addressing members of the FICCI Ladies Organisation (FLO), he praised their contribution to promoting entrepreneurship and empowering women across sectors. He noted that women-owned enterprises are increasingly playing a vital role in India’s economic progress and export ecosystem.
Industry experts at the event echoed the Minister’s views, emphasizing that access to international markets can provide a major boost to MSMEs. They observed that trade agreements often reduce tariffs, streamline customs procedures, and improve regulatory cooperation, making it easier for businesses to export their products and services abroad.
The government has consistently focused on strengthening India’s export capabilities as part of its broader vision of becoming a developed economy. Recent policy initiatives have aimed at improving infrastructure, enhancing logistics efficiency, and promoting manufacturing under flagship programmes such as Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat.
Prasada expressed confidence that the upcoming trade agreements would further strengthen India’s export ecosystem and create new opportunities across sectors ranging from manufacturing and textiles to technology and services. He urged MSMEs to prepare themselves for greater participation in global markets by investing in innovation, quality standards, and digital capabilities.
The FICCI FLO National MSME Awards Ceremony celebrated the achievements of outstanding enterprises that have demonstrated excellence in innovation, sustainability, and business growth. The event brought together policymakers, industry leaders, entrepreneurs, and stakeholders from across the country to discuss strategies for strengthening the MSME sector.
As India continues to deepen its engagement with the global economy, the successful conclusion of key trade agreements is expected to provide a significant boost to the country’s small business sector. With improved market access and supportive government policies, MSMEs are poised to play an even greater role in driving economic growth, employment generation, and export expansion in the years ahead.
