In a major boost to India’s horticultural exports, the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) has facilitated the first-ever export consignment of fresh Uttarakhand litchi to Italy. The landmark shipment, dispatched from Dehradun on June 18, marks the entry of the state’s premium litchi into the European market and highlights the growing global demand for India’s high-quality fresh fruits.

The inaugural consignment consisted of one metric tonne of fresh litchi and was exported to Italy through coordinated efforts involving APEDA, the Government of Uttarakhand, exporters, farmer producer organisations (FPOs), logistics partners and other stakeholders. The achievement is being viewed as an important step towards expanding India’s fresh fruit exports and opening new international markets for produce from the Himalayan region.

Known for its exceptional taste and quality, Dehradun litchi enjoys a strong reputation among fruit consumers. The fruit is distinguished by its natural sweetness, bright red appearance, pleasant aroma and superior pulp quality. Uttarakhand’s favourable climatic conditions and fertile soil contribute significantly to the cultivation of premium-grade litchi that meets international quality standards.

Several renowned varieties of litchi are cultivated across the state, including Rose Scented, Calcuttia and Bedana. Major production centres are located in the districts of Dehradun, Haridwar, Nainital and Udham Singh Nagar, where farmers have long been engaged in commercial litchi cultivation. The successful export to Italy demonstrates the potential of these regions to become important contributors to India’s horticultural export basket.

The development has also brought encouraging news for local farmers. According to officials associated with the initiative, growers received prices approximately 25 per cent higher than prevailing domestic market rates. The premium returns are expected to motivate farmers to adopt better cultivation practices, improve post-harvest management and align production with international quality requirements.

Experts believe that access to overseas markets can significantly enhance farm incomes while creating new opportunities for value addition and supply chain development. The success of the first shipment is likely to encourage more farmers and producer organisations to participate in export-oriented agriculture.

APEDA has been actively working to strengthen India’s agricultural export ecosystem by supporting quality certification, infrastructure development, market access initiatives and capacity-building programmes. The authority has played a key role in connecting Indian producers with global buyers and ensuring compliance with international food safety and quality standards.

The export of Uttarakhand litchi to Italy also reflects India’s growing credibility as a supplier of premium fresh produce in competitive global markets. European consumers increasingly seek high-quality fruits with distinct taste profiles, and Dehradun litchi is well-positioned to meet this demand due to its unique characteristics and strong market appeal.

Industry stakeholders view the achievement as an important milestone in diversifying export destinations for Indian fruits. Expanding into European markets not only increases export volumes but also helps reduce dependence on traditional destinations. Such diversification is considered essential for ensuring long-term growth and resilience in the agricultural export sector.

The successful shipment underscores the importance of collaboration across the agricultural value chain. From production and harvesting to packaging, logistics and market access, coordinated efforts among government agencies, exporters, farmers and support organisations played a crucial role in making the export possible.

As India continues to pursue its agri-export growth strategy, the first export of Uttarakhand litchi to Italy stands as a notable example of how regional agricultural products can achieve international recognition. The initiative is expected to pave the way for larger export volumes in the future while enhancing the global presence of India’s premium horticultural produce and creating new economic opportunities for farmers across Uttarakhand.
